I suppose some readers might read the opening page and fret that they have embarked on a journey with a princess whose worst problem is ink dripping from a quill. Not to worry, my friends! Tilda's story starts soon, and once it starts, it really moves. We soon meet the rest of our cast of heroes, and then Ms Haskell throws them into one situation after another. These resourceful young people always seem to find what they need, aided by their own fundamental decency and the good people around them. Being young, their solutions to problems create new challenges as often as not, and so they travel from place to place and surmount difficulty after difficulty without ever bogging down or wearing out my interest. Middle grade readers may struggle to put this one down at bed time.

This is not a fair review as I bought the book mainly for the artwork on the cover. However, like Merrie Haskell's other work, The Princess Curse, it looks great, and I plan on ordering more copies. Besides, who wouldn't want a Handbook for Dragon Slayers? I have read the authors other book, The Princess Curse, and enjoyed it.
My 8-year old Granddaughter and I read this book aloud together. She and I both loved it! The characters were amazing, the plot kept us wanting more and the overall writing style was perfect. Keep the books coming Ms. Haskell. We cannot wait until your next one comes out!!!
My daughter loves this author! Another fantasy story that is well written and enjoyed by a young reader. Highly recommend.

Another phenomenal book from someone who is fast becoming a favorite author. Haskell sees the tropes, waves at them, and then turns away from them into a much more interesting story.

Ultimately, it's a story of strength and transformation (sometimes literally, mostly figuratively). The characters are complex and feel real. It's pure fun, until you realize that there's deeper philosophical thoughts hiding underneath the fun.
A fairly quick read (about 7 hours for me), Merrie Haskell's Handbook for Dragon Slayers was very, very good. A young princess chafing at her duties, and convinced everyone hates her because of her lameness, Mathilda's strongest desire is to be an author. I highly encourage you all to follow her adventures as she is kidnapped, rescued, faces dragons and The Wild Hunt, and battles sorcery with wits.

My only complaint is that we never get to hear how Frau Dagmar managed her part!
