I am an avid Keene fan. His zombie books are fun and original, and this story didn't disappoint either.

It has been raining for 42 days and nights, and most of the world is now under water. No one is sure what has brought about this apocalyptic event and to the author's credit, he leaves that conclusion to the individual reader. This is a story about the end of civilization as we know it and the last survivors. It is not a happy tale, but it is an exciting one.

Teddy Garnett, an elderly widower and his best friend; Carl Seaton, are trying to wait out the rain and survive the giant worms that are plaguing Punkin Center, West Virginia. They are up on the side of a mountain, looking down at an ocean of water which covers the surrounding towns. Teddy is dying for a dip of snuff, but there is none to be found. He is horrified when he witnesses a bird being eaten one day by a huge worm that jettisons up out of the ground and snatches the Robin out of mid-air. He is soon joined by Earl, the town nut case, and a group of folks that have traveled by helicopter from the north eastern coast.

The book is unusual in that it tells Teddy and Carl's story, then when the helicopter crashes, it switches and tells the tale of what has taken place elsewhere in the U.S. It is a nice touch and very powerful, in my opinion. The thought of slimy, writhing, smelly worms is alone enough to make most of us want to hurl, but just imagine those worms becoming the hunters and mankind, the hunted.

This book takes it's time developing the characters, as well as, the story itself. Keene is a master at creating characters you can identify and sympathize with. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys horror with a plot and not just a bloodfest.

The Conqueror Worms Brian Keene 9780843954166 Books Reviews

Having enjoyed Dead Sea, I eagerly downloaded The Conqueror Worms, hoping to enjoy another great Brian Keene title. Alas, it was not to be.

After reading through the first 1/3 of the book with great anticipation, I was introduced to what amounted to a completely different story. He then tried to take the last 1/3 of the book to tie the 2 stories together and the book just completely flew off the rails. He gives a very dry, literal, explanation for doing this; and that makes it feel all the more out of place.

The strength of the first part of the book is it's simplicity. The characters were finely crafted and there was a great deal of depth to explore and Keene did just that. I just wish he would have stuck with that simple approach all the way through to the end.

I will say the Keene still remains a very talented writer and he knows how to dot his "I's" and cross his "T's".

This particular book just didn't do it for me.

FOR KINDLE READERS At the time of writing this, both this title & Dead Sea downloaded with all the text aligned down the center of the page, with no way to change it. Hopefully this is something will address in the near future.

Thanks for your time.
In Keene's somewhat lengthy catalogue...this book tends to get ignored by many. A shame. This is one of Keene's finest (and bleakest) books.
i never would have thought I'd find myself rooting for an 80 year old hero in an apocalyptic scenario brought on by never ending rain...and worms.....but so be it.
Loved the story, loved the characters. Truly suspenseful action and i didn't have any problem with the dialogue (though some of his books do suffer from that).
The book is basically split into 2 acts (2 stories) that center on different groups of people trying to survive a cataclysmic event.
Satanists, sea monsters, mermaids, and lots and lots of worms. You will not be bored.
First and foremost, I'm a writer myself. I read a lot of books, and must say, I plow through many bad ones. This wasn't one of them. I really enjoyed this book. Unique idea, creepy happenings, good dialogue. Everything in this book was spot on for me. If you like anything H.P. Lovecrafty, you will probably like this. The Conqueror Worms may just be a new FAVORITE on my favorite book list.

It's written in first person from an old man's POV, and goes through what happens after it rains nonstop across the earth for several days. Then weeks, etc. But if you thought a constant downpour wasn't bad enough, something else waits IN the water. Old things lost in time. The floods are nothing compared to what comes later.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves good horror. I couldn't stop turning the pages. I had to know what was coming up next from under the rising waves.

5 stars, Mr. Keene. I also read 'The Rising' by the same author. Though I enjoyed it too, I liked The Conqueror Worms much better.
The rain had been going over for over 40 days and nights. The roads were being washed out, the ocean was reclaiming the land and civilization as we know it had ended.
But Teddy, on top of a mountain in West Virginia, and a few others, were surviving. Sooner or later the rain had to stop and the pieces of mankind would get back together. Right? Wrong.
This is what one tag called smart horror and it is. It is one of those horror stories where the real horror is not outside the window but inside the human mind. True, there are giant worms out. True, it is raining and dark and everything is dying out. True, the toilet does not work. But the horror is knowing that Teddy is going to go outside, leaving the safety of the house, for those darn cigarettes because he needs his nicotine!
It's just human nature. To fight, to love, to want, even when everything is falling a apart and the world is going to Hell. Or in this case, to the worms.
The first part of the book is scary, yes, but still realistic, somewhat believable. The second book pushes it a tad, bringing in magic and more, but that's OK too. By that time you're starting to believe in weirdness anyway.
The ending could had more closure, but it leaves it open for a second book, which is OK. And it leaves us with hope, which is always fun, because we know there isn't any.
I highly suggest reading it if you are a fan of Lovecraft or Mr. King's early novels.
