Two main characters. Annelie Peterson owns a publishing company, and is also a philanthropist thanks to winning the lottery. She decides to produce the movie versions of the best selling Diana Maddox (lesbian criminal investigator) books. The other lead is heretofore straight Carolyn Black described several times as "older" and a "diva" but also talented actress who is the popular voice in the audio version of those books. She is aggressively pursuing the starring role in the movies. In the course of this pursuit Carolyn falls for Annelie. There's a good bit of back and forth regarding trust issues, personal and professional, before things get worked out.

Although I initially found the premise of the novel fresh and interesting, it didn’t take long for me to realize that Course of Action was not going to be a compelling story. Once the characters broke through their initial boundaries, the plot became fragmented with many loose ends. I think it should have had more about actually making the movie(s) instead of getting the role and moving in together. Sure, there’s sex, plentiful, but it never really goes where both characters say they want it to. Carolyn made the transition to lesbianism quite effortlessly and without a moment's trepidation though she was 45yo and hadn't previously thought about it ... ever. As an aside, let me just say I do not like my strong, wealthy, great looking leading characters to be needy. Needy does not work for me.

I think this book is a good barometer of how far lesbian writing has come in the last few years. While this story is good (2006 winner of a GCLS award), it is not put together anywhere close to the quality of writing today.

I read the other reviews and expected a compelling story, but instead found a book where the character were not sufficiently developed so that you don't really care one way or the other what happens. The book follows the two main characters through a series of events that seem to have no real connection or consequence to the story. The relationship is contrived and the connection between the main characters is superficial at best.

While I didn't expect a great piece of literature, I was hoping for a compelling story. This book doesn't deliver. Save your time/money there are better ones out there...
This being the first time I've read anything by Gun Brooke, I have to admit I approached the book a little skeptically. Oh my, was I in for a surprise! This is a wonderful story, it has all the elements. Joy, pain, sorrow, happiness and the intimate side of things is wonderful too. Needless to say that same night I went back online and purchased her other two romance books. "Sheridan's Fate" and "Coffee Sonata". I can't get over how
prolific Gun Brooke is. She has a fan for life in me. I promise you, you'll laugh, cry and swoon with this book.
very enjoyable novel. the characters are real and complex with real life problems. taking chances often takes you to undreamed of joys. a great summer read.
From the plot description, I thought this book would be a more interesting read. However, I found it to be a rather average story with somewhat boring characters. Although I finished reading it, it was with little enthusiasm to do so.
Very nice quick read. I have enjoyed Gun Brooke's before and some how I have missed reading this one. Do not want to comment to much to give the story away. But there was a couple of parts that I laughed out loud and got some funny looks from those around me. Carolyn with the firefighters was funny as heck and unfortunately extremely possible with some of the women I know. These two characters I have meet before in one her other titles and it was nice to see how there relationship had developed.
Carolyn Black, an actress nearly past her prime according to Hollywood standards, is ruthless in going after what she wants. And, in this book, she wants the role of Maddox in a trilogy of films. No one else is as confident as she that she is right for the role, including the publisher of the books and producer of the films, Annelie Peterson. This is the story of Black's manipulations to get the role.

Brooke excellently portrays the kind of person Black is - ruthless, manipulative, etc. At the same time, she gives the reader an inside glimpse of Black that says that she's not all bad - except when she wants something. So when she falls for Peterson the reader can't be 100% sure whether it's part of her game or the real deal.

This is a well-written book dealing with a difficult personality to portray adequately. But Brooke ably has the reader rooting for Black and hoping that the powers that be give her the part.

The romance between the two women is also well written with just enough angst as to be realistic - she addresses the issues of a lesbian falling for a "straight" woman, etc.

All in all, Brooke has written a fine romance that is hard to put down once begun.
The story here is good, but it's more of a vignette out of two peoples' lives rather than a romance. There's not really a lot of "will they, won't they" tension in it, and I kept waiting for this one big thing to happen to tear them apart--so they could find themselves and get back together--since they got together so early in the book. I guess what I'm trying to say is that their love is never truly tested. There are things that happen, but there's no tension, or worry, that they'll break up.

It is kind of refreshing to read a story where two people get together and stay together through ups and downs, but I don't think there were enough "downs" to make the story really compelling. There was so much the author could have done to make the story riveting. For example, Carolyn could have had angst about coming out. Annelie could have shown her doubts about Carolyn more obviously. They never even fight! The father storyline could have been more developed, more emotional. Something, anything, to give it tension. The only tension in this book was expecting tension and getting none. I wanted a good tear-jerker. Insead, it was just a nice read that I could pick up and put down when I wanted it.
