Killer of Enemies Joseph Bruchac Books

Killer of Enemies is a pleasantly entertaining YA book about an Apache heroine who kills monsters.

A mysterious event causes all electronics to stop working, plunging the world into disaster. Prior to the cataclysmic event, the Ones (the elite rulers) had created genetically manipulated pets for themselves. Freed of their electric fences, these monsters are now roaming the earth.

Lozen’s the official monster killer for a walled town run by four insane Ones. Lozen does not occupy this position of her own free will, but the Ones are holding her family hostage. She has to keep killing the ever more dangerous beasts they send her after, all the while plotting for a way to free her family.

At the beginning, I had some trouble with Killer of Enemies due to it’s choppy prose. Either the writing improved, or I got enough into it that it stopped bothering me after a while.

Killer of Enemies doesn’t have a particularly strong plot – this is certainly an action driven novel. The majority of the book is about Lozen out in the field, killing enemies. This was basically an action movie in book form.

Lozen’s Apache heritage was very important to the book as a whole, and it’s what helps make it something beyond a simple action novel. Her heritage is always at the forefront of the story in more ways than one. For instance, Lozen recounts Apache folktales, using them to find tactics to kill the latest monster.

Lozen was a solid lead character. She was fairly restrained in her few interactions with others, but her inner narration is filled with her judgements, memories, and hopes. She was smart, capable, and a complete badass!

However, she was pretty much the only developed character. Since so much of the book is her alone in the wilderness, no other character really has the page time to become anything more than one dimensional.

I liked how romance was not the focus of the story. Killer of Enemies avoided much of the romantic angst that the Young Adult genera seems infected with. There was sort of a romance subplot, but it was very minimal and probably shouldn’t have been included at all. Lozen’s center of attention is her family, and no love interest is going to change that.

Killer of Enemies is on the borderlines of genres. It’s primarily post-apocalyptic and dystopian, but it includes fantasy elements such as Lozen’s ability to read people’s minds and sense when danger is near. However, Killer of Enemies is at risk for introducing too many elements. While I thought most things worked, the vampires felt really out of place (why does every YA book need vampires?). However, the other monsters where very well done.

I’d recommend Killer of Enemies to anyone looking for a fast, action driven story with a unique female lead.

Killer of Enemies Joseph Bruchac Books Reviews

This story is self-contained--no cliffhanger. There are no sexual scenes. No follow up book at this time, but a novella--Rose Eagle--is available. Rated middle teen and older for violence.

Lozen is a killer of monsters. Haven is an old prison taken by four Ones--previous rulers, now reduced in station due to everything electric dying. The Ones, each with their own obsessions and considered mostly insane by the population they rule, use their small armies to track down and bring to Haven individuals who would be useful to them.

Lozen, her family and a group of other Apaches, live in a small village. Haven sends out soldiers to kill everyone except for Lozen, her mother, and her two younger siblings. Held as hostage to Lozen's good behavior, they do what they can to stay out of the Ones' view. Lozen, her fighting and survival skills well known, is used to kill modified monsters in the general area as decided by the Ones. With patchy telepathy skills, a gift for locating whatever she is thinking about, surprising assistance from spirits of her culture and the occasional helpful creature, Lozen works to free her family from Haven and to return to living in the desert like her ancestors.

At times this story reads like a video game go on a quest to find monster, kill monster, return home to rewards of seeing her family. The more she pleases the Ones, the bigger the monster is, the more time she gets to spend with her family. There's even a dramatic escape. We don't know anything about Lozen's life before being forced to Haven, although lessons from her father and uncle are recalled when needed. We know nothing about her family other than her mother is a strong figure in the Apache family, or the two younger siblings. This occasionally becomes frustrating as characters act as though we already know the background.

The story is decorated with myths and folklore stories from Apache culture. Lozen always remembers one when faced with a difficulty for which she doesn't yet have an answer. Using the spirit of the story she is able to do what she needs to do safely. She and her armory friend Gus always seem to know what to put in her backpack. We aren't informed of everything she carries, which occasionally leads to a Mary Poppins' carpet bag moment. The only one that jarred this reader was the coyote skin she pulled out when preparing to engage one of the monsters.

Lozen is an engaging character. She uses impassiveness to lead her enemies to underestimate her, and limited speech to reinforce the idea she isn't that bright. This occasionally reads as a Smart Indian against Stupid Settlers story, but as the Stupid Settlers pretty much get what they deserve, it doesn't shadow the story.

This is an interesting and engaging story with memorable characters. The author has noted he is considering another book to tie together the two stories available, but has not yet announced a timeline.
