I so wanted to give these books a five, but I hesitated for one reason only, I was confused as the author traveled from one generation to another. To many characters. I would be engaged in one generation then have to abruptly stop and jump forward or backwards to the next generation. I loved all the characters and I loved each generation, but I did not enjoy feeling like I was on a spinning wheel. I would have rather had books separated by generation and not intertwined, even at the end of the last book, I was still confused over the family connection. Olivia Newport is an excellent writer and is engaging until she twists the plot to a different year. Her characters are wonderful. I will read her again, but not if she continues to engage in confusing her readers. Maybe I'm simple, but for me reading is for enjoyment and I found the constant jumping of the books stressful....

Taken for English Valley of Choice Olivia Newport 9781616267148 Books Reviews

Although at times I was confused by the dual timeline in the story, I have to applaud how well Olivia Newport balanced the two stories, historical and modern. My preference was for the modern story, probably because I felt more bonded to Annie, but near the end of the book, as the tension mounted, I found myself wrapped up in both. I love the romance Newport constructed between Rufus and Annie, and how their feelings for one added tension to the storyline. I would suggest that anyone new to the series should begin with the first book. This isn't a stand-alone novel, but as Book 3 of the Valley of Choice series it merits a 5-star rating.
I love Olivia Newport's books, and really enjoyed the first two books in this series. In this book, however, Ms. Newport seemed to run out of ideas...the book dragged on with Analise spending most of her time chasing down a lost girl who didn't want to be found...lots of fires caused by arson, and a dual timeline that moves the story back and forth between modern times and the 1800s. The dual timeline is, to me, just irritating! I disliked this in all three books...in fact I would skip entire chapters so I could move on with the modern story. I love historical fiction...in fact I taught history, but I don't care for the dual timeline, which is kind of a new trend among authors, I've noticed. Definitely loved her series on the Chicago World's Fair and I look forward to any future books she writes.
What an excellent book, story, and series; just wish it hadn't taken me so long to finish the series.

Will Annie be baptized into the Amish community in Westcliffe, Colorado?

Can Annie help a runaway Amish girl, Leah?

Will Ruth find her way in her new English-lifestyle? As a nurse?

Who is setting fires in Westcliffe, Colorado?

Will there be an Amish wedding? Or two? or three?

Readers will read that the past and present Amish era's have a hard time adjusting to English way of life? And what not to cross with Amish beliefs. Can the Amish characters stay true to their belief and not break any rules?

The answer to all of these questions and more is in reading the book for the answers.
I actually really liked Valley of Choice 1&2, and had gotten drawn in reading them to a patient of mine. She was discharged- and I had to run out and pick up all three so I could read them and find out what happened to Annie and Rufus. Volume 3 is the weakest of the series- the alternating chapters of the Beiler/Byler history are less engaging than the first two volumes. I understand why the change of year and location- though it would have been nice to continue with the original family line as it had been. I hope that the ending is setting us up for a volume 4, perhaps at the turn of the century...
In Taken for English, book 3 of Olivia Newport's Valley of Choice series, Annalise, Annie, Friesen's journey continues as she becomes a member of the Amish church. Annie constantly faces the challenge of conquering her "English" thinking and ways while continuing to grow in the Amish faith. Although Annie's decision to join the church and live a plain life was not based on romance, she does look forward to her future with Rufus. However, Rufus doesn't appear to be in any hurry, causing Annie to question if that future will ever happen.
As in Accidentally Amish, book 1 of the Valley of Choice series, Ms. Newport tells Annie and Rufus' story along side another couple's story. The author deftly moves between the couples' stories, weaving past and present together. Ms. Newport also blends in romance, faith, and intrigue, which will leave you guessing up to the last moment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and felt the author did a great job of bringing closure to Annie's journey. Even though she faces many challenges, Annie is able to conquer them and make decisions that help her continue to grow in her new faith, ensuring that she will no longer be Taken for English.
You do need to read the three books in order. It would be too confusing to skip one. I loved the heroine! She was a strong woman, a likable person, a successful career-woman in the corporate world, who decided to leave all that behind for a more simple life. I have KNOWN people like that! It was entirely believable, even her struggles with her "English" parents, specifically, her mother. I liked her Amish boyfriend Rufus, although I thought it was a really dumb name. I could have liked him better if he were named Adam, or Michel or something… Not Jacob- too many Jacobs in Amish books already! <G>.

I loved how the heroine got involved, how when she saw a struggling young girl, she didn't turn away. I loved how her cap was always a little askew-- she was not obsessed with the "letter of the law" but with the intent of the law.

I loved that as an inspirational romance, there was no sex. Too many young authors writing for the genre forget that sex and Christian romance cannot happen in the same book. If we want to read smut, we can find it on any grocery store shelf, or any mainstream novel, or any other romance. We turn to Christian romance because we would rather enjoy the romance, and not the physical intimacy behind the bedroom door.

I hope this author has another book coming!
